Paul Pushes for Open Debate on Syria Action

With momentum seemingly building for a potential U.S. military action in Syria, Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday opted for caution and debate.

In a statement released on his own website, Paul said the following:

The United States should condemn the use of chemical weapons. We should ascertain who used the weapons and we should have an open debate in Congress over whether the situation warrants U.S. involvement. The Constitution grants the power to declare war to Congress not the President.

The statement comes at a critical time for Congress and the Obama administration. The White House is, of course, looking at the possibility of involving the U.S. in the Syrian conflict after numerous reports that President Bashar Assad may have used chemical weapons against Syrian rebels, hurting innocents in the process.

It also comes just a day after Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA) called on the White House to seek Congressional approval before starting a U.S. Military strike, according to the Washington Post – something Paul also touched on in his statement. Rigell had 20 cosigners on  the letter as of Tuesday afternoon.

Paul, in his website’s statement, went on to say that getting involved in the conflict would actually help the U.S. in any way become a safer country, regardless of the outcome.

The war in Syria has no clear national security connection to the United States and victory by either side will not necessarily bring in to power people friendly to the United States.

With Obama leaning so clearly toward putting the hurt of Syria, it seems the debate coming from the White House is much like the White Queen’s form of justice from Alice in Wonderland. “Sentence them first – later we can have a trial.”

Just what our country needs…another war. Let us know how you feel about the US striking out against Syria in the comments below.
