Digging Into Rand Paul’s Techie Side: Why SXSW Was A Win For The Kentucky Senator

Digging Into Rand Paul’s Techie Side: Why SXSW Was A Win For The Kentucky Senator

While his opponents were embroiled in their own traditional preliminary battles in New Hampshire, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul took a different approach and focused on tech leaders and young voters at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, TX.

The 2016 race-hopeful senator took the stage at the SXSW conference to talk about issues that other candidates have perhaps been neglecting, but which very much interest tech savvy young voters – Internet privacy and young people’s role in politics.

“I Don’t Want The Government Looking At My Stuff”

The Kentucky Senator particularly attacked the NSA surveillance program. He said that, while it began under George W. Bush, it was Obama’s administration that really brought the NSA program to the level where it is now.

On Obama’s policy towards privacy, Paul said that:

“He showed much less regard for privacy than the Republicans did before him.” (Techcrunch)

Rand Paul Snapchats His Way to Young Voters and Millennials

The current president Barack Obama is in office thanks to young voters who were sick of Democrats and Republicans and their back-and-forth shenanigans.

But even Millennials have lost faith in their 2008 and 2012 favorite and now see him as just another politician who turned away from them.

Well, in return, they’ve turned their backs on him and found a new favorite.

Unlike other presidential-hopefuls on either side, Paul knows that, to reach a young mind, you don’t do the things every politician has done for the last 50+ years. His weapon to reach young voters is not big, expensive political rallies.

Instead, Paul snapchats and tweets his message to young voters, and, as he said to POLITICO:

“We reach thousands of kids that we might not ever have reached before. In fact, we’re probably reaching some kids who aren’t yet 18, that will be 18 when the elections roll around the next time.”

Do you think that Senator Rand Paul’s message will reach young voters and more tech savvy ones as he hopes? What about his position on the NSA and other things he talked about at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference?
